Our Favorite Therapy Tools: Part Two

Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.

-Fred Rogers

In this part two of our Favorite Therapist Tools, we showcase some great ways to work on speech, physical, and occupational therapy skills at home.

Twister Ultimate

Why we love it:

This game makes physical therapy fun!

  • following directions
  • balance
  • turn-taking
  • crossing midline
  • building core strength
  • Upper and lower extremity strength and proprioception
  • motor planning

Did you know…?

Crossing the midline is important for a lot of daily tasks because it’s how the brain switches from left to right and it makes a huge difference in both motor and more cognitive skills! Your midline is an imaginary line down the center of your body. My kitty Archie was more than happy to demonstrate it for us.

Modifications: We taped the Twister mat down so it wouldn’t slide during his session.

Another way to make this game fun is to tape letters or pictures from a favorite movie. For example, instead of right foot red, right foot on Lightning McQueen, left foot on Mater. There are so many ways you can make this game exciting for your child.

Channie’s Multi-Sensory Learning: Level 1

Why we love it:

Channie’s Multi-Sensory Learning Workbook starts by teaching children to label and draw items. Labeling is one of the very first skills to teach children that words have meaning. Children learn that words are created by a sequence of letters, and they these words to label items and pictures.

  • Builds vocabulary and comprehension- children will learn new words, paired with photos to help them remember. The workbook organizes the new vocabulary into categories to help children process new information and simplify understanding.
  • Early reading skills- Children will learn the early concept of reading from left to right with guidance by following the dots under the words in the sentence provided on each page.
  • Builds fine motor skills- the unique blocks help children learn to write letters and words consistently. This visual approach teaches self-correction. The traceable pictures teach beginning drawing skills.
